There are at least a thousand things I love about being a 100% digital artist. There's the comfort I feel with my computer in front of me, and the magic of creating something from literally nothing. Then there's the fact that I can experiment with zero risk of losing anything but the time I spend doing it. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera… The point is, digital painting is the perfect medium for me.

That said, by far the best part is my ability to work almost anywhere. As long as I have my laptop, my drawing tablet, and a place to sit, I’m in my studio. Depending on my mood—and where the kids are at any given moment—I can set up all over the house in minutes. I'll paint in my office, the sunroom, out on the porch, or even in the kitchen so I can hang out with my wife while she cooks. (And no, that’s not patriarchal—she genuinely loves cooking and is fantastic at it, while I’m much better suited for other domestic chores, like the dishes!)

My absolute favorite place to paint, though, is curled up on the couch at night.

Every evening, my wife and I settle into our favorite spots on the couch, turn on whatever show we happen to be watching (lately, it’s been ER), and just hang out together while I create whatever fantastic reality has been stuck in my head all day. The kids are in their rooms, the curtains are closed, and we’re just together. We enjoy our show and work on our own things while making stupid jokes and winding down from the day.

To me, that is the perfect studio.
